Australian Idol - SHOCK Wildcard Verdict

Submitted by djwright on Mon, 2005-09-05 22:26

I've gone through all the details from tonight's verdict, but first we need to announce that Australian Idol decided on a TOP 13 tonight after the Judges chose two of the weirdest people to send through to the finals as their wildcards... Emily and James!

And after the public were split choosing Dan over Roxane by less than 1% of the votes!!!

Yes, that's right, Mark, Marcia and Kyle chose to put two people through that clearly did not deserve it and when watching Roxane and Daniel who were most popular people on public vote served up a PILE OF UTTER CRAP about how bad they feel and blaming the decision on the Australian public... Although only seconds beforehand they'd decided to not put them through in favour for Emily and James...

The SHOCK announcement was that after Dan was voted through the judges decided to put Roxane through to the finals saying that she was the one person who had never ever let them down and who deserved to be in the competition. This makes the final group a TOP 13, and forcing next week to be the week that will send off TWO finalists.

The final judgment looked like this…

The Judges Screwed up Choices:

The Public Vote:

The Shock Announcement:

  • Roxane Lebrasse - Performed All By Myself Roxane was a shock announcement at the end of the show forcing the competition to have 13 finalists.

Contestants That Are Going Home:

This is how the gig went down…

The night started harmlessly, the usual boring introduction by Andy G, the normal dialogue between Andy and James that filled up more time and the usual explanation of the evening’s planned events.

The lovely hosts then introduced the current finalists, Fist Dan, then Kate followed by Chris, Laura, Anne, Milly and Natalie, Lee and Tarni. Kate said that the trips been a lot of fun, she’s had some time to relax lately which has been good. Dan spoke about how much fun the house will be with the finalists.

Then we were treated to recaps from last night’s festivities and performances…

After the recaps the judges were interviewed…

Kyle: “It’s very hard when three people go into the same room with completely different agendas, but we fought it out. And its hard to be beaten down by a lady, especially when there are two men, but I think we’ve come up with a great result.

I think James is a rig and he seems like a cool and funny guy, good voice too.... i also like Lee, Emily and Dan England.

James if you ever read this - wanna go for a drink sometime? haha (seriously)

And if Dan wins i hope they give him songs that he will suit, he reminds me of someone who would sound good singing stuff like John Butler, The Beautiful Girls, Donovan Frankinreiter, Ben Harper... that sort of laid back surfy type stuff.. so i hope idol doesnt ruin his image.

I cant believe im even on this site, i feel like a groupie... but for once idol has people that are entertaining and worth watching.

the thing i dont like about this roxanne/top 13 stunt is that the judges seem unaware they had the option to choose her ahead of James and Emily, yet they didn't.

mark said “There is actually one person who has never let us down all the
way through and who is not standing in that room or standing on that
stage right now who really should be in the top twelve but isn’t.

Lauren said “I had a great time, and I wanted to show Australia the real me and
not what they might be voting through if I was being someone else.

I thought it was obvious!

Whilst Daniel was singing his song after the verdict that he was the final contestant to be placed in the Top 12, the camera cut to the judges for a moment. There was a "behind the scenes" worker who was in deep discussion with them.

It dawned on me that the voting had MAJOR problems - & that they were not counted in time OR that Roxanne was the real winner.

Hmmm, well, just thought Id add my beliefs to the mix!

Since Roxane and Dan were the top 2 vote getters.. I don't think the judges could choose either of them to put through with their judges choice.

ya...needs more boys.....

But James is sooo hot....!!!!

I'm actually qutie pleased with the Top 12 plus Laura.

Was happy Dan and James in particular got through. I can live with Emily and the Roxane thing was so planned. I like her but she's really not all that.

Still the top 13 thing is good for publicity and it serves to negate Laura a little.

Too many would be Divas however. Laura and one of them out first week.

i like that concept...

a Top 12, plus Laura

fingers crossed that squeak-toy gets the boot before laura

my predictions for the first round (if i sound cynical about it all, it's because none of my favourites are left)

anne robertson:  has one memorable performance under her belt.  she could be in trouble if she's anywhere below her best.

chris luder:  has a huge following, so should be ok even if he completely chokes.

dan england:  ditto

dan spillane:  hasnt been any good at all so far this competition.  unless he's one of the best on the night (unlikely, given his limited range), i reckon he's gone.

emily williams:  giving headache enducing shriek-athons is enough for the judges to drool over her.  she'll get through as long as the judges adore her.  if the judges dont give her a near-touchdown response, she's in trouble.

james kannis: still hasn't lived up to his undeserved reputation.  he'll probably give us more of the same.  the judges will love him because he kinda looks like they imagine aus idol should look like.

kate dearaugo:  one reasonably good performance so far.  if the song she chooses this week doesnt suit her, she's in trouble.  also: her bingo-wings wont be winning her any fans.

laura gissara: i'd be very surprised if she left the first week.  if she gives a bad performance (and the judges tell her this), she'll receive sympathy votes.  if she gives a good performance (and the judges recognize this), she'll receive thousands of "i told you so" votes.  either way, i'm hoping she's safe. :-)

lee harding:  could be the best of the night, or he could really bomb.  i think he'll be safe.

milly "lyn scully" edwards:   her reputation is out of whack with her voice and performances so far.  she'll be safe, and probably a judges favourite, but i don't expect she'll be in the best of the night.

natalie zahra:  mark's got a touchdown lined up for this girl.  if she doesn't deliver this week, he'll say how much potential she has and practically beg people to still vote for her.

roxane:  any publicity is good publicity.  the only way i see her leaving is if the judges turn against her.  that's unlikely.

tarni: haven't seen her in weeks.  she's in trouble unless she delivers, big-time.

my prediction for the bottom 3:  emily, dan spillane, tarni, (plus anne if it's a bottom 4)

definitely getting the boot: emily.

I agree with what they said earlier, i think it would have been all planned out from the start that if Roxanne didnt get through on the popular vote they would make it a top 13.

With the votes being so close and channel 10 wanting t build up the tension so much by saying there only 1% in it instead of just getting the people's vote out of the way first they put through the two judges choices. If they had done the judges choices last Roxanne would have been in there.
