Inside Idol - Top 08 Song Choices - "Big Band"

Submitted by djwright on Thu, 2005-10-06 11:53

Tonight we were able to hear the Idols practice their song choices for the "big band" show, we'd previously hoped that they are better song choices than the ones they've had over the last couple of weeks, the last thing we needed was another exhibition like the "Super Group" or "Idol's Choice" evenings...

Most of the idols find that "Big Band" night is as far out of their comfort zone as a snowman in Iraq… So it will be interesting to see how they cope with the stress that such a week could encourage.

Earlier on in the week the Idols were taken to meet Frank Bennett (oh dear god how I like that guy) who sang for them and taught them a little about the Big Band, we saw the Idols on stage, Milly and Daniel in particular seemed to be fairly comfortable with the stage and style. James seemed to spend most of the night realizing that “Big band

I missed the show so i'm

I missed the show so i'm only talking from what i've read here. I agree with you "country" and I think that although die hard Lee fans will still worship him, casual voters, the ones who make the difference and vote on who was the best, because they havnt got a favorite yet, will stop liking Lee, which is retrospect will reserve him a place in the bottom 3. Mabye not eliminate him but definetly knowk the smile off his face.

I have just been listining to full recordings of all of Millys performances and they arent nearly as bad as I remember, mabye it's becuase I couldnt see her atrocious "dancing" but she sounded better. Her semi-final performance was touchdown worthy (yes i'm serious). She sounds although she will blow the roof off the place tommorrow, and I will be cheering that she is back in the game.

Kate also looks promising, I have always nursed a soft spot for her, but know she is a fully fledged favorite of mine. Caught my eye in semi's and was amazing every week. This week may fetch her a touchdown, the song "Cry me a  river" Will be great for her.

I was a huge fan of Emily befcuase of her Boheimina Rhapsody and R.E.S.P.E.C.T but I have gone of her a bit. It's proberly becasuse of the whole, underdog thing, still I egerly await her performance.

I hope Anne raises the roof but I have no idea how she is going to do Minnie the Moocher. Dan England will be the same, mabye drop a bit, the first favorite never lasts. Daniel sound pathetic again and if her wasnt so cute looking (not hot) he would have gone long ago.

At last James is goning to blow it and i am gunna be ever so happy. Haha, him and sway, I pity the person who has to dance with him, I wonder  if it will be set up, must be. Glad he'll be leaving though.

Thats my thoughts, See ya!

Really looking forward to

Really looking forward to Kate's song choice...she should pull it off no probs...Emily's sounds great too...I disagree she'll have problems...I think she'll nail it...as for the others...well can only wait and see...I think Lee and Dan E will have probs...no way Lee can 'punk' this up?!?

Inside idol was the 'tissy show' this week, sure, throwing water bottles across the room and saying, 'don't talk to me' as you storm out the room, is more senastional, than admiting Mark has a point, and I do say I support him 100%...so the drama queen award this week goes to Kate 'De Rouge'... ha, ha...

So the idols ask, what needs to be done to get a touch down???  I call it the 'tingle factor'... the wow factor that blows you away...Callea's "Bridge over Troubled Water', "the Prayer" and some of Casey's stuff did it for me...Kate's Johnny Farhnams no. came close and Emilys Queen's no- for me that was worthy of a touch down...

Mark's right when he says 'it's no walk in the park'...stop being so safe...too predictable...that's what Mark is on about...so I understand his grief...

I don't know why people

I don't know why people think big band is hard. It's just lazy, slow, sleepy singing. Gees even Lee and Milly will sound alright in this format.

No doubt the judges will all be told to pump everyone up this week. There'll be a lot of "you're back" , "you absolutely nailed that" , "touchdown!".

You know it's true.

I hate Lee a lot. He didn't even admit that he didn't understand the song. And he still doesn't know. Total loser!

Big band can be difficult

Big band can be difficult especially if you have never sang with BB before, depends on what song they have chosen, can have a lot of jazz in it, and if you think jazz is lazy or easy, you have no idea what you are talking about.

The band is prominant, and singers have to really go along with it like it is part of there clothing so to speak, like a glove tha fits comfortably, I think Kate chose the best song Cry me a River, as this suits her voice to a tee, and her slow sexy rendition of the song with stand out. As far as the others go have to wait and see.

It's not lazy singing at

It's not lazy singing at all... it's actually quite difficult to pull it off well.

My predictions are that Anne will blow it, so will Lee and James.

You're kidding yourselves.

You're kidding yourselves. The vocal range and delivery required in most of these songs is nothing. This format is all about the band. So shocking singers like Milly will slot right in because the band will make her look good. Gees even Shannon Noll did a good job in this format.

Basically in all the series so far there have only been 2 worthy singers - Anthony Callea smacks them all by a long way, and Paulini had a bit of talent. But the rest have been just shocking. Ah, the odd OK singer here or there. How come the American Idol always has strong singers in their final 12 and Australia doesn't?? Because Simon and co. don't get fooled by people just because they wear a beenie, or have dreaklocks, or wear stupid black wraps on their fingers (I can't stand Lee)

That is what I said the

That is what I said the band is up front, but If you were to listen to some great artists like Ella Fitzgerald and  Cab Callaway just to name a few, getting into the band and going along with it is an art, jazz skits, are not easy, having to look for a not that does not exist to make your own, now I know that none of these will be able to be any where near that good, but to say that it is easy, you have no knowledge, been listening to to much pop.

Good to see Inside Idol

Good to see Inside Idol Tonight.

I was interested in seeing Lee's response to Mark Holden's comments.

Mark was right on. Mark was trying to share his passion and hopes for the young idols.  I hope each of the idols can appreciate the value in Mark's point.

For Mark a great idol uses song lyrics to share what is on their heart--using their voice and body, to express their hopes, dreams, joys and sorrows.

A singer (or a judge) who has little regard for the lyrics of a song shows themself to be shallow. To make matters worse a singer who sings a political song like Green Day's 'Holiday' shows contempt for the 1000's who have died from decades of bad US foreign policy in the Middle East.

September 11 and the Bali bombings have happened because of stronger nations bullying other nations economiclly, politically and militarily to protect their own interests and side-lining others.

I look to song writers and singers - like Green Day-- to use their influence to encourage young people to stop and think; instead of blindly following political leaders or passively accepting the mainstream media.

I look to our young idols to see their singing as an amazing opportunity to contribute to building a more nurturing and caring society.

Our idols in choosing their lyrics more carefully can counter the fear, suspicion and alarm that is being pushed by our political leaders and our mainstream media.

I know for Lee it was a shock being talked to in such a manner. Mark offered no apology for his conduct.  But Lee needs to see that Mark's anger comes out of a feeling of 'righteous rage'.  Anger that has built up from his personal experience of the bungling wars that have been fought in the name of 'freedom' since when Mark was a younger man in the 60's and since time immemorial.

Well done Mark for making your point clear!

Thank you.

 You are dead right with

You are dead right with that one "Country" Mark was right, they think they are stars already.
