General: Final One - Top 12 Performances - September 10 2006

Submitted by djwright on Sun, 2006-09-10 21:48

Voting Information:

Tonight's Idol show was possibly one of the best in the show's Australian history, with each of the top 12 being given free range to choose their song to perform they took the bull by the horns and showed the country why they have been chosen to be a part of the Idol finals. With two U2 songs, a healthy dash of Rnb alongside a few song choices that were a bit left of centre the audience was wooed, entertained, delighted, embraced, teased and tortured over a two hour show.

Now the show has finished it's your turn to choose who will stay and who will go, you get to turn 12 into 11, so who did you like, who did you love?

What did you think of the Judge's comments? What about the new 199-JUDGE number innovation? What about the audience and the stage?

WEre you at the performance? What happened? What did you think?

  • Song Choice:

"For You I Will" by Teddy Giger

    Djwright's Comments:

The Karate Kid Dean had to hit the stage first, in a group of 12 the first on stage must be difficult, is it just me or does he look like a character from the tv series "Seventh Heaven"? Vocally this is good start to the night, its a song that suits him but it's a bit left of field, good gig, strong vocals in the end and the audience seemed to appreciate it. Performance: 6/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

Caching Caching Caching… Mate, that's the sound of cash registers, that smile will light up cash registers all over the country. and Teddy Giger has nothing on you.

    Marcia:

You have arrived baby, the audience loves you. If you can pull a performance like that out every time you hit the stage that's what it's all about.

    Kyle:

I think that the end was fantastic and strong, I was concerned about the nerves at the beginning but you need to keep that vocal serious, because the audience wants someone who will be continually good.

  • Song Choice:

"Right Here Waiting For You" by Richard Marx

    Djwright's Comments:

Now, I'm well aware that Richard Marx is currently touring Australia, that's why I’ve decided to crush my cassette tapes from the 80s, burn my photos of me with a mullett and bolt my doors closed, but to sing his song on Idol? This is a sin, and it's almost an unforgivable sin to sing Richard on Idol, kick him out now dagnamnit!!! Ok, now that's out of my system... Vocally Joseph's nerves seem to control him so he's rather pitchy and looks uncomfortable on his seat. As the performance goes on his vocals seem to get better, but even with the key change there's not enough power behind his vocals. Performance 5/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

You've got so much going for you, there's so many positives with you, you've still got some vocal work to do but well done.

    Marcia:

I think you did a great job, I was worried at first, but I'm not worried now.

    Kyle:

That was a pathetic song choice, I hated it. I know you suffer from stage fright but I want that gone, I want to see the real you.

  • Jessica Mauboy Phone 1902555563 or SMS "JESSICA" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"Stick With You" by The Pussycat Dolls

    Djwright's Comments:

The sweet and adorable 16 year old from northern Australia has chosen to sing a song by the not so sweet Pussycat Dolls, the first note from her mouth was pitchy, as were the next couple of lines until she warmed up and became more confident in herself and the stage. Jessica has a little way to grow up but she's still got a better vocal than Joseph, and as the song went on it was easy to note how she picked up in confidence. Nice performance, but not great. Performance 6/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

You seemed to start out a bit shaky which is a bit surprising, was it nerves? The good news is that it was so much of a cooler song for you to choose, it was an age appropriate song and I loved it.

    Marcia:

you've got the smoothest voice, well done.

    Kyle:

The look is a bit Target isn't it?

  • Damien Leith Phone 1902555564 or SMS "DAMIEN" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"With Or Without You" by U2

    Djwright's Comments:

The first U2 song of the evening, surprisingly from an Irish lad, vocally Damien's hard to fault, it's good to see so many songs chosen to suit the performer tonight and this is definitely one of the best song choices of the evening thus far. There's some great power ballad moments in this song for Damien, something that a couple of the guys have missed out on tonight, his vocal range in unquestionable, his power is great as is his vocal control. Performance 7/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

You did show us great parts of your voice in that performance and that was all good, I wish that you'd taken that song and given it a unique twist I'd have gone all the way with you, that strolled into club land for me.

    Marcia:

I love you man, you're so cool cause you went for that note and the audience went with you, you're dynamite.

    Kyle:

I thought you did a fantastic job man, I loved it, but we need to get some braces aroud those tic tac teeth...

  • Ricky Muscat Phone 1902555565 or SMS "RICKY" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

    "Walking Away" by Craig David

    Djwright's Comments:

Ricky's a tad one dimensional for me really, maybe he'll grow on me over the next few weeks as he sheds his skin. I'm also not a fan of Craig David, so I'm kind of distracted during this performance, but he seems to pull it off vocally and the audience certainly love him and his shark fin hairdo. Performance 6/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

Everywhere I've gone there's been so much support for you there really has. I know it's a popularity competition and that might get you over but to me to be honest it's more Trev west not Kanye West. I wish you'd try n sing something other than RnB

    Marcia:

You sing what you want to sing, that’s the most comfortable I've seen you tonight, well done.

    Kyle:

Week after week we say sing what you know, don't change... That is a slick look

---
  • Lisa Mitchell Phone 1902555566 or SMS "LISA" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"Fall At Your Feet" by Crowded House

    Djwright's Comments:

This has got to be a tough gig for Lisa, for a girl that I think could sit down and sing a song with her guitar without moving and perform a great song it must be hard to throw her into a room of 600 people screaming and no chair, no guitar and just a microphone. The nerves showed and maybe we need to allow her to have the guitar in hand on stage or this will always be a hard gig for her. vocally this was a nice gig, slightly pitchy but she has something about her that just makes you like it. I liked her song, but felt for her through the gig as this isn't the way she'd sing if she were to win this competition, this isn't natural for her. Performance 6/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

You chose a really tough song to sing, actually I was wondering if it could be a half step up, I think you did a really really good job, what you do which is good, when you sing you kind of go into your own world and allow us to share your aura.

    Marcia:

You look uncomfortable, I felt for you, this is all new to you but the most important thing you can do is allow the audience to go to you, you are compelling, well done.

    Kyle:

I've pretty much loved everything that you've done but tonight I hated it, tonight i waited for the feeling but I didnt get it tonight.

  • Lavina Williams Phone 1902555567 or SMS "LAVINA" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys

    Djwright's Comments:

Lavina's got one heck of a set of pipes on her, and this song suits her vocally, although I'm not so sure about those square ear rings... Vocally there's no sign of pitch problems, the only thing I might say is that she could have the same power problem that Emily had which was that she goes all out from start to finish and you're worn out by the end of the song, but it was a great performance. Perfromance: 7/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

I'm so glad that you didn't sing Whitney or Celine, that was a cool song, you're dancing on the edge of Divadom, you nailed it and you won me.

    Marcia:

It is a god given gift you've been given. Working in theatre has taught you how to perform, well done baby.

    Kyle:

Vocally brilliant, but lets look at the looks, on TV that hat makes you look fat, you look "too once were warriors."

---
  • Chris Murphy Phone 1902555568 or SMS "CHRIS" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"Wish You Well" by Bernard Fanning

    Djwright's Comments:

What is up with the shirt? hahaha, Chris is a big kid in a big playground playing on equipment that he's been playing on for years. He knows exactly what he's doing, what songs to pick and how to use his vocals, this is a song that I thought he'd sing really well and he did just that, great song choice, great performance, dodgy shirt. Performance 8/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

You are the consummate professional, you do what you do do really well, you choose songs that suit you well, and I'd love to see you go out of your comfort zone, that's a challenge to you, I'd like to see you push yourself into a song that has a bigger range that makes you grunt and go higher...

    Marcia:

You walk on the stage and you own it, you have a great voice and I love that song...

    Kyle:

I love the rhinestone cowboy shirt, I'm loving anything you do. You do look uncomfortable on stage without your guitar.

---
  • Klancie Keough Phone 1902555569 or SMS "KLANCIE" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

    "Joylene" by Dolly Parton

    Djwright's Comments:

I've got some mates in a band in Adelaide who pull this song out every now and then for a laugh... Am I surprised that Klancie's gone Country again? No. Am I surprised that Klancie's singing Dolly? No. Do I like the black one piece dress she's wearing? hell yeah. Vocally this isn't a bad performance, there were hints of nerves and she really didn’t hammer much out until the end, but it was a clean performance from her, she's definitely growing in confidence. Performance 7/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

Really powerful vocals, really really good job.

    Marcia:

One of my favourite performers is Dolly, there's something so real about her, I really dig her because what she sings is so real. You sang it real good Klancie, well done.

    Kyle:

I think you sang that really well, I think tonight for the first time I'm enjoying what you're singint, but tonight is the first time that you've stamped yourself as a great singer.

  • Guy Mutton Phone 1902555570 or SMS "MUTTO" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"Where The Streets Have No Name" by U2

    Djwright's Comments:

The second U2 song for the night, and I'm not surprised that Mutto's chosen to go with another U2 song, his vocals suit them really well. Performance wise he owns the stage and gets the audience to get involved in the song, showing his live gig experience while also making good use of the cameras. Vocally there is not an issue, he's solid all the way through the song. Fashion wise, the all black suit does him well. Performance 8/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

You're so charismatic man, you have so much charisma, you just, there's something in your voice when I hear you sing, there's this touch, this catch that pulls you in and you've got it. I think you're magic. You're totally the bomb.

    Marcia:

You look gorgeous, great song, great choice, thankyou for coming out and working the room.

    Kyle:

Two things I hate and one thing i like, I hate the hair, I hate the hand but EVERYTHING ELSE i love, everything else is perfect.

  • Reigan Derry Phone 1902555571 or SMS "REIGAN" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

    "Breathe In Now" by George

    Djwright's Comments:

This is a damn hard song choice now, the only people I've seen able to pull this kind of song off have been George, Katie Noonan has an incredible vocal range that allows her to sing really low and high and draw the listener into a journey. Reigan is pitchy at best and doesn't do the song any justice at all, I cringed when I heard the song choice and was proven to be correct. The last person to sing George on stage was either Casey or Heidi and either way they didn't try and sing it in the first week of competition. Meanwhile I like what she's wearing, pity there weren’t more side on shots to make more use of that cleavage... Performance 5/10 Fashion: 8/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

I absolutely love your new look, you look so so beautiful. Sensational, your look is incredible, but you chose an absolutely difficult song to sing that requires a lot of control but your arrangement was too delicate for the song and was verging onto musical theatre for me. Song choice song choice song choice song choice...

    Marcia:

You look beautiful, stunning. You've got an amazing instrument and you need to know it like Katie knows hers.

    Kyle:

I'm not familiar with that song but that song may have lost you votes, you look a million dollars.

  • Bobby Flynn Phone 1902555572 or SMS "BOBBY" to 191010
  • Song Choice:

"When The War Is Over" by Cold Chisel

    Djwright's Comments:

Chisel? CHISEL? Dang dude, this is definitely what I had thought you'd do, get some of your own songs out there before you get kicked off... Bobby's the weirdest dude on the block and his interpretation of this song is nothing but weird, but as weird as it is it's vocally spot on and pisses all over Cosima's Idol impersonation of this song, I could have benefited from hearing a bit more of that song from him though, it was too short. Performance 8/10

    Judge Comments:

    Mark:

When I heard that you were going to do that I thought "what's he possibly going to do with a chisel song?" Mate, I heard on every single note on every single thing you did from the start to the end. Bobby you are an artist mate, I cannot wait to see what you do next week, you are an absolute artist.

    Marcia:

We first heard you sing and it blew us out, and the best thing about this is that Australia's now hearing it, you are something else Bobby...

    Kyle:

Is it too early to give the dude a touchdown Mark? I've got nothing to say, brilliant job.

well , from looking at the

well , from looking at the grades ... i must admit you guys mark very easily :) or maybe it's because your giving them the benefit of the doubt due to the fact its there first week up on stage !

Well i clearly didn't, because if you dont go hard on them the first week, what are they going to take to improve on ? ( That's why i wasn't impressed with some of the decisions made by the judges ! ) Atleast go a little cruical, because next week there going to hammer them, and it's going to be there fault that they never told them what to improve on !

Im slowly watching each

Im slowly watching each performance on youtube - starting with Lavina of course! awesome! and the stage looks soooooo kewl!
makes NZ Idol look pathetic!

hey you, good to see a

hey you, good to see a familiar face (well familiar user name lol) in here, yup lavina is awsome, check out jessica aswell, shes chur chur.

sorry forgot to include

sorry forgot to include comments about Chris Murphy

Again like him a lot more that his brother .... very similar voices but totally different edge and attitude .... Chris was fantastic live and pretty much the same on the television- couldn't sit still in the audience   just wanted 2 get up and dance ....  LIVE 8/10  TV 7/10

I only have the audio of the

I only have the audio of the show, so I'm relying on my ears alone.

Dean: 6.5 - He really needs to work on his vocals a bit.  There were a couple of "rough spots", but it could have been nerves. It definitely sounds like his fan base will keep him there for a long while while he improves.

Joseph: 5 - I really love it when he sings anything other than RnB, but I was not blown away.

Jessica: 4 -  Her performance sounded like a train wreck, but perhaps it's because I've heard the song she sang a million times and her phrasing was way off.  Btw, I think that Jessica has one of the best voices I've ever heard in my life. The girl absolutely gives me chills - but not tonight!

Damien:  8 - I have not been an uber fan of him, but he blew me away tonight by doing something more contemporary.  He proved to me that he IS marketable in mainstream.

Ricky: 8 - As tired as I am of RnB, I really thought he nailed the song.  Amazing job.  We definitely have enough Usher/Timberlakes out there, but I have to give this kid credit. His performance could be released as a single.. like a one take in the studio. Very good.

Lisa:  7 - People are calling for "her head" on other forums after this performance, but vocally she did what she's done all along. I didn't love the song, but I loved her vocals.  I love that she doesn't sound like anyone else.  I love that I would know her instantly if I heard her on the radio.

Lavina: 9 – Awesome performance.  I’m just tired of Diva songs.

Chris: 7 – His voice is so ready for the radio.  I wish his look matched, but I don’t think it will matter.

Klancie:  7 - Hated the song, but loved her vocals.

Mutto: 8 - Amazing performer.  Love his unique voice and he’s way sexier than Toby Rand of Rock Star: Supernova.  Wish Mutto was on the Rock Star show instead of this one.  He won’t get the proper appreciation on this show.

Reigan: 6 - Who the heck keeps picking these awful songs? (I know it’s her) I love her voice.  Here versatility is unmatched, but this song was terrible.  Thank God her voice is amazing, so she made it sound great anyway.

Bobby: 10 – Yeah, he’s a freaky looking dude, but you all should hear what he sounds like when you aren’t looking at him! Lol… Wow, I was shocked at how good he sounded.  Some parts in there reminded me of Damien Rice (Probably the broken falsetto – or the phrasing).

Dean: Not spectacular and

Dean: Not spectacular and slightly forgettable but definitely safe 6.5/10

Joseph: awful song choice, too nervous thus too pitchy. I kept wishing he'd have sung 'Tears in heaven' which he was singing in the intro and which was beautiful. He needs to sing something a bit busier than a ballad to cover up the pitch/nerve problems. Could leave tomorrow in spite of his eyelashes and dimples 5/10

Jessica: she has the nicest voice of all the girls. She also suffered from nerves but when they weren't there her voice shone through. Good song choice, her clothes were absolutely fine. How does Kyle know what they sell in Target if he doesn't shop there himself! Safe 7/10

Damien: Loved it! superb! Safe 8.5/10

Ricky: I quite liked him originally. He is strong vocally but does try a tad too hard on stage. His constant bobbing up and down is starting to annoy me as much as Anthony Callea's tapping of the microphone. He also looks a bit like Anthony and looked very heavily made up to me....and his eyebrows are too perfect must be waxed! Loved his threads though. Safe. 6.5/10

Lisa: Oh dear! Woe is me! Slaughtered Crowded House. She had no idea of the melody, was off pitch, looked terrified, has no range, her Missy Higging accent was an afterthought. I sometimes hear her forget to do it and she sounds quite good...anyway...she is in danger of leaving tomorrow 4/10

Lavina: Nailed it. 8.5/10

Chris Murphy: Nailed it. 8.5/10

Klancie: Hate the song, loved her performance, beautiful vocals 7.5

Mutto: He does nothing for me. I am indifferent to all his performances so far. He can sing but I dunno ....whatever. Safe 5/10

Reigan: Why does she pick such weird songs? They are always really lyric laden it must be quite an effort to remember them all and also hit the highs and lows of the complex melodies. You can tell she is really clever musically though and has a lovely voice and is very pretty. Safe 6.5

Bobby: I cringed when he missed his falsetto but was amazed at the stregth of the rest of it. I really liked his audition song and I like that he is different even though a bit weird looking. I didn't think he was as good and solid as Damien but would definitely like him to stay and he obviously impressed the live audience. It was definitely too short a rendition though. Safe 8/10

what about mutto dont you

what about mutto dont you get?

Well it is hard to

Well it is hard to describe. I like all the parts just not the sum of the parts or the whole (um stuffed the metaphor sorry) . I think he is good looking, he looks comfortable on stage, his vocals are fine and he is a very personable chap, I like that he is a teacher and  he had really nice hair before going bald.  Maybe it is that he is has a 'rock' leaning and unless it is very special that genre just doesn't do it for me. I will reserve judgment till I see him sing something completely different and if he does it well he will win me over. :)

My Verdict:(Just like to

My Verdict:

(Just like to say, i went fairly easy on them all, due to the fact it was their first time, but next week im going cruical !)

9 to  10 - EXCELLENT

Under 4 - POOR

Dean: 7 /10

Joseph: 6 and a half/10

Jessica: 6/10

Damien: 5/10

Ricky: 6 and a half/10

Lisa:  7/10

Lavina: 8/10

Chris: 7/10

Klancie: 6/10

Mutto: 6/10

Regina: 6 and a half/10

Bobby: 8 and a half/10

Well Here is My Verdict - i

Well Here is My Verdict - i have placed two voting scores next to each name  the first score is based on what I saw and heard when I was in the live audience and the 2nd vote is my impression from what I watched when I got home .... and I was surprised there could be a difference!

9 to  10 - EXCELLENT  7 to 9 - GREAT   4 to 6 - AVERAGE  Under 4 - POOR

Dean: 5 /10   6/10
I think Dean is a very average performer ... but good he has great magnetism for the camera and for all the teeny boppers who I am sure wiil vote on looks alone - DOES NOTHING 4 ME.Joseph: 6 and a half/10

Joseph   6/10   5/10
Poor bugger looked petrified when I was in the audience and looked even worse when I replayed it later on...God love him tho he is a cutie pie with fantastic dimples but will need to relax if he is going to go on in this competition.

Jessica: 6/10  6/10
Great Energy but have she has nothing more to inspire or draw me into her performance.

Damien: 8/10  8/10
This boy is magic - I loved his performance - very strong live and on tv.
Big chance of being in the final 3 - and i love his tic tac teeth - its truly irish!

Ricky: 6/10  5/10
Sung well but R&B & Craig David songs bore me to tears - too overdone.

Lisa:  5/10  6/10
I love Lisa but was hugely disappointed in her performance live (it seemed a little better on the tele later)  I truly hope she hasn't blown it .... she has so much more to offer and she just fits the perfect Idol ... looks originality creativeness and youth - ENTIRE PACKAGE.  God I will have 2 spend a small fortune today voting just to make sure she stays in ....

Lavina: 8/10 - 6/10
She sung brilliantly and her energy was awesome - heaps better than her younger sister but Diva's again bore me .... and if we are going to have an Aust Idol shouldn't they be an Australian Citizen (not just a permanent resident)  Go back to NZ and try your luck on NZ Idol or get that Citizenship organised and then I will consider.  Her performance played back on tele was dull just as Kyle had mentioned.

Chris: 7/10

Klancie: 7.5/10  6/10
I turn hot and cold about Klancie - but her live performance was excellent - she looks much better in real life than on tv .... not sure about her all the same but dont mind if she stays or if she goes.

Mutto: 5.5/10  7/10
His live performance appeared ordinary but played back later looked fantastic ... don't really think he did thesong any favours... seemed very flat live. God i hate his hair  it was great last week when he wore the beanie ... so handsome but that stupid haircut annoys me .... hope he goes on further  may make it into top 4

Reigan: 6/10  8/10
She looked hot ... a little scared and nervous.  Was not too impressed with her live version (but ould of been getting very tired and restless and in need of toilet break)  TV version was so much better but I dont understand why she does such vocally challenged songs .... believe she pulled it off from my point of view but the average voter may not know the song therefore not appreciate what a great job she did ....

Bobby: 8.5/10   8/10
OMG  There is something about this guy - it is beyong original.  To look at he sort of reminds me of a young Roger Daultrey in the Musical Tommy .... his quirkiness almost make him look deaf dumb and blind - BOTH HIS LIVE AND TV PERFOMANCE WERE KNOCK OUTS  .....

And the winner of Australian Idol 2006 is BOBBY

JennyChristo: Its great that

JennyChristo: Its great that you watched it live and to hear about that perspective!
